Community Spotlight: Amy Talbott/Place And Maker Studio

Louisville is comprised of some incredible people. Many of those people we get the opportunity to work with or see within the walls of Swag’s. We are passionate about our community and want to share with you some of the wonderful people we have worked with/encountered.

Recently, we reached out to Amy Talbott owner and creator of Place & Maker Studio to work on a t-shirt design we could use for some of our Swag’s merchandise. At Swag’s we believe it is important to support other small businesses and were excited to work with Amy. We were 100% satisfied and impressed with Amy’s work and wanted to share more about what Place & Maker Studio is, how the business began, and the person behind Place & Maker Studio. We hope you all enjoy this insight into Place & Maker Studio.

Conversation with Amy

  1. Give a brief description of yourself and how you began your business?

I'm the artist/owner of Place & Maker Studio, so I create all the art prints as well as managing the business side of things. I've always been a creative person, but I never really had a focus for my creativity until I took some graphic design classes at JCTC in the beginning of 2020. When the COVID pandemic began and I had a lot of extra time on my hands, I created a couple drawings of landmarks in Beechmont, my neighborhood, and a few people wanted to buy them. I kind of unintentionally started my business, but since those first sales, I've been very intentional in creating and selling new products.

  2. What are you passionate about?

Well, a lot of things! I'm obviously very into making art and finding new ways to be creative, but besides that, getting up from my desk and being active is very important to me. I love running, walking, hiking, and yoga. I'm also passionate about my neighborhood. I like to get to know my neighbors and be involved, and I run an Instagram account (@beechmont.louisville) to share how awesome it is. I have also never met a cat I didn't love, so don't get me started talking about my two cats, Millie and Thomas.

  3. What products/services do you offer?

My main offering is art prints and posters featuring buildings and landmarks in Louisville and the rest of Kentucky. I also offer custom house and business portraits.

  4. Are you part of the running/walking community? If so what does it mean to you? How has it impacted your life?

I have no idea where I'd be without running and the community that comes with it! For one thing, I may not have ever started dating my husband, Jeremy. Our first date was running in 2011, when we were both training for our first marathon. These days, I'm involved with Iroquois Hill Runners and hardly ever go for a run on Southern Parkway or in the park where I don't see someone I know. It gives me so much joy to just be able to wave when I see familiar faces. Running has gotten me through some of the toughest times of my adult life. I've always said that even if there were no physical benefits to running, I would continue to do it because of the mental health benefits.

  5. What do you enjoy most about creating and more specifically this project with Swag's?

I think my favorite thing about creating is getting totally wrapped up in a project, and trying to make it look as good as I can. It's both relaxing and exciting at the same time. I loved giving the design I did for Swag's that vintage souvenir t-shirt feel, and working with that awesome vintage logo.

  6. Which Louisville park is your favorite and why?

Iroquois. Hands down. I'm one of those weirdos who likes hills, and Iroquois has those, for sure. Besides that, I like the diversity of the park-goers there, I enjoy the people watching when there are concerts at the amphitheater, and the fall foliage is the best in town.

  7. Additional Information

Right now, I'm on a mission to visit all 120 Kentucky counties and draw something from each. I just finished number four, so I'm still early on in the project, but you can see the ones I have finished on my website.
